Styles of Music Video

Styles of Music Video

Music videos can be made in a variety of ways, using different techniques as a way to try to sell the song. Different styles consist of styles such as Narrative based, cinematic, studio based, intertexuality, parody, pastiche and finally "as live".

Narrative based
Which is based loosely on  a storyline. An example of this is "Bad day" by Daniel Powter, in which consists of a boy and girl who have a "Bad day". Even though the artist is in this music video and is singing the music, does not interact with the characters of the story.

Cinematic
Cinematic music videos often contain a high production value and give off a film like quality to it, its often like a story, an example of this could be "So far away" by Avenged Sevenfold this.
Studio Based
Studio based music videos are often filmed in only one location, like the studio. They are often filmed using a variety of shots. For example Fit for Rival's "Crash".
Intertextuality
This type of music video refers to existing texts already for example the Wanted's "Walk's like Rihanna".
  Parody
Parody style music videos make fun of another text for example the song "I feel better" by HotChip which parodies other music videos.
  Pastiche
These types of music videos often work seriously with another genre and/or time frame. An example of this could be "Hey Ya" by Outkast.
  "As Live"
These type of music videos are made from live footage from musicians playing on stage. For example Coldplay's "fix you".
  Animation
Animation music videos are made by using stop motion animation or digital. For example the music video of "Sledgehammer" by Peter Gabriel.
